Boston - 2017

Uncle Howie's Wolverines

Welcome to the Team Page for Uncle Howie's Wolverines!!!

Update (9.4.2017)

We are saddended to announce that Howie passed away on September 2nd, 2017 at about 12pm.

Howie was a fighter until the very end, and he died as a true warrior. He was/is committed to continuing the fight beyond the grave. As you will read below,  Howie decided to donate whatever Mass General wanted of his body, and since he has been treated at Mass General for the last 2 years, this will provide incredible insight to the medical community to study and better treat this rare mutated cancer.

If anyone would like to send condolences to his family, please email HowieStrongUSA@yahoo.com

Services will be held on Saturday, September 9th from 12pm-3pm at Casper Funeral Home in South Boston, and all are welcome to attend.

Howie asked that donations be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society and/or this 5k.

Howie would definitely not tolerate this being his last fundraising event, so Uncle Howie's Wolverines will continue the fight, and hopefully we will come with half the strength he showed.

We appreciate your support!!!

A little bit of background;

Howie served his country right out of High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps from 1997-2001, where he received a Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, and was Honorably Discharged at the rank of Sergeant.

After finishing his education, he began working for the US Department of State as a Federal Agent in 2007. He was responsible for Diplomatic Security at the American Embassy in Baghdad Iraq, Tel Aviv Israel, and Islamabad Pakistan.

Howie returned to Florida with his wife Alejandra, and a couple weeks later he was diagnosed with stage 3 Colon Cancer. That was in 2014. After a year of chemo and treatment, Howie's cancer was in remission, and the road to recovery was clear... In typical Howie-fashion, he couldn't get out of the United States fast enough, and traveled to Europe and South America, with plans to restart his job as a Federal Agent in Miami.

2 months later, the cancer reemerged and had mutated... things got much more serious.

Howie decided to move up to Boston MA to receive full time care at Mass General in October 2015.

For the last 2 years, we've watched this Universal Soldier attack cancer again, with every ounce of energy and strength that he could muster.

As I write this, today (August 28th) is his 38th birthday and I just brought him his birthday presents in hospice. It's a tough scene to describe, and worse than anything imaginable.

If you saw him, you would think that "cancer is winning", but Howie has decided to donate his skin tissue to medical research, so the fight is definitely not over.

When I told Howie earlier this year that I was thinking of creating a team in his honor, he encouraged me to start the team, and told me he would have to start training for the run... He was not kidding.

So that's the background.

From what I've learned about colon cancer, early detection is critical... Colon cancer is affecting more and more young people, and the best prevention is symptom awareness.

The Colon Cancer Coalition is designed to get the word out, and that's what we are trying to do with this fundraiser.

So please consider joining our team, making a donation, or both...

We already have a great team going in to the race, but we'd love to see YOU there.

Our goal is to raise $10,000, can you help us get there?

Thanks for visiting the page, and thank you for your consideration.
