Do it for the people you love
This is my third year participating in Portland's Get Your Rear In Gear 5K Run/Walk, an event to benefit the Colon Cancer Coalition. My grandmother and two uncles had colon cancer, and I am on the watch list myself after having multiple large adenomas removed. In 2015, a fellow co-worker and all-round great guy whom I really cared about and for, lost his life and the promise of a fun retirement, to metastatic colon cancer. And that really sucks...
No one likes to talk about colonoscopies or colon cancer seriously. People say "I don't have time. I hear the prep is horrible. If I have polyps or cancer I just don't want to know." But all I can ask those same people is "Do you have a spouse or partner, a child, a friend, a parent who loves you and wants to keep enjoying life with you?" Well if you do and you love them in return, you owe it to yourself, and them, to do everything within your power to take control of your health and get screened.
Please help me reach my modest goal of $250. Even $5 to the cause counts, and you can continue to donate even after the event on August 5th. The funds I raise will stay right here in PDX, helping with prevention, early detection and treatment for this disease.
And even more important — if you decide to skip the donation, at least schedule your colonoscopy when your doctor recommends! It could save your life, and that means a lot to me and to those who love you most.
