I am running in memory of my wife, Christine
I'm participating in the 2017 Boston Get Your Rear In Gear 5K Run/Walk, an event to benefit the Colon Cancer Coalition, in memory of my wife, Christine Jaworek-Lopes.
Christine was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer on January 1, 2015. What a way to ring in the year. She was having trouble eating and sleeping for a few months and we attributed those things to stress and life. How wrong we were. She always had the appropriate blood tests and things monitored with her doctor but the blood markers for colon cancer never presented themselves during her tests.
She went to the emergency room on New Year's Day and they admitted her. I will never forget the phone call at 1am from her with the news. Thankfully, she was quickly transferred to Brigham and Women's Hospital and was admitted. That weekend she had surgery to insert a stent to try and relieve the blockage. Two days later, she had another surgery to remove the stent (for fear of rupturing) and the vast majority of her colon. We thought she would be out of the woods after the surgery but the cancer metastisized to her liver.
After her surgeries, she spent her remaining time undergoing various aggressive chemotherapy treatments. She kept up doing everything she had in her life right through May- teaching, advocating, volunteering. She graded her students' final exams three days prior to her passing on May 21, 2016. She felt it was only fair to her students as she taught all of the semester except three classes.
Last year, my goal was to finish the race as I was foolish enough to promise Chris I'd run one more race for her. I was successful in my goal and even set a personal best. Thankfully, I cannot even remember my time. This year I am going to attempt to run but I will probably be passing the running torch to my son, Zachary, as he has won his age group two years in a row. I will even try and get Cassie out training for this event.
Please help me reach my goal to support colon cancer research and I will certainly do my best to finish, well run some of, the race.
Thank you in advance for your help.
